is a programme created by someone I have never met, but whom I now think of as a good friend. His name is Nitin Mistry.

When Createspace quietly decided to lay off staff and curtail services to writers, a lot of people came out of the woodwork to profit from the situation. Some people and companies charging hundreds of dollars for the pleasure of creating and loading up your ebook to Amazon. Turns out that not only can you do it yourself in a few clicks, but you can still afford quite a few lattes and smashed avocados with the change.

My favourite thing about UEC is that I can write my entire book, pictures and all, and convert it with a single click to any format I want and load it up quickly to any site I want. Including this one! Here is a list of things you might use, (courtesy of Pressbooks). Looks pretty costly to me!

  • Hire an ebook developer & graphic designer ($200-$2,500): Having your book manually formatted by a professional for both digital and print can cost anywhere from $200 to $2,500 according to Bibliocrunch’s Publishing Budget Tracker.
  • Createspace Simple or Custom Interior Design ($199 or $349): Images and templates are limited. Turnarounds for design and revisions can take 7-10 days.
  • Bookbaby Interior Book Design and Formatting (starts at $299): Revisions at extra cost.
  • Book Cover Design (add another $100-$1,200)

For the many years I have been using UEC I have NEVER had to purchase new modules. All upgrades are free forever, (so long as forever lasts). These days I use the Universal Ebook Creator to very quickly create books for any author, for advertisers, for people who just want a job done quickly and cheaply. My cost to do the work? Well, given that I only take on work if someone gets down on their knees and begs me, while waving dollars, I’m not going to tell. Let’s just say it is less than the programme costs in the first place. Want it? Click the link and have a look a the many video tutorials there are.

What do I call myself? A novelist? A journalist? Writer on demand? Copywriter? Ghostwriter? Poet? Is there a single word to describe all these things? if anyone knows one please tell me. I started out life as a journalist after my service time in the RN. I was 22. My love then was music writing, contributing articles to most of the pop/rock magazines of the time. As time went by I ghostwrote biographies for celebs, wrote novels, and made a general living from writing everything from love letters to translating menus in China to acceptable English. I have written greetings cards, manuals, How to books on so many subjects I forget. My living has been as a writer on demand. So, my blog is an eclectic collection of HOW MY BRAIN WORKS. Recently I started writing blogs for company blogs. In my retirement I find myself writing more, about more subjects than I ever covered as a roving journalist. I ask myself why having reached the age of leisure why I am now busier than ever before! If you have a blog, or a job to offer, I'm an obsessive researcher and turnaround time is fast. Yes, I know, I'm a HACK. A writer for money. A gun for hire. But hey... we all have our failings. Thanks for calling in. Feel free to chat and comment. I'll even get back to you with a thank you note!
